As part of the Rhesi flood protection project, the International Rhine Regulation Authority will begin hydraulic modeling tests in the spring of 2019 to optimize and verify the project plans. To this end, two sections of the Rhine will be faithfully reproduced to scale in a specially converted hall in Dornbirn (Vorarlberg) and tested using the model.

The hydraulic model tests are being conducted to verify the positive changes in flow behavior and riverbed conditions calculated in the “General Project.” The findings from the model tests will be directly incorporated into the next planning phase. This process will also involve an intensive search for potential cost savings through structural optimizations. The data obtained will serve as a useful tool for the International Rhine Regulation.
