As part of the renovation of the Wilhelminian-style building at Kandlgasse 37, two new attic floors were added and the existing attic space was converted into high-quality living space. The entrance area was made accessible by removing a mezzanine level and was equipped with a new elevator running from the renovated basement to the second attic floor.
A reinforced concrete ribbed floor was constructed between the raised ground floor and the mezzanine, enabling the conversion of one floor from residential to school use. Due to the increased number of occupants, the building was retrofitted to meet seismic standards. Steel frames enlarge the existing window openings while also improving the structural rigidity of the existing structure.
On the courtyard-facing facade, column-free balconies were constructed along the entire height of the building. In the inner courtyard, expanded storage areas with a clear span of approximately twelve meters were created, along with a new steel emergency staircase. In addition, the historic stairwell was fitted with new railings.
The structural engineering work included lightweight steel and wood construction in the attic, solid construction on the upper, ground, and lower floors, as well as underpinning and foundation reinforcement using the jet grouting method. The project encompassed the renovation of the existing structure, attic conversion, steel construction, and concrete construction.
