Niederbahn Nature Kindergarten, Dornbirn

In Dornbirn Niederbahn stands a nature-based kindergarten: a single-story wooden pavilion that takes up 60% less space than conventional kindergartens. It features a wraparound, covered area for independent access and four groups arranged around a central space inside. The clear structure is based on a 2.5 m x 2.5 m grid for a material-efficient wooden construction with solid wood cross-sections.

Sustainable construction was a key priority. The wood comes from the city’s forest, and the use of non-glued, single-species structural elements adheres to the principles of the circular economy. Only non-toxic products were used, ensuring a healthy and low-emission building. Open utility ducts running along the perimeter of the ceiling facilitate maintenance of the building services.

The floor slab is made of reinforced concrete, and a deep foundation system using precast driven piles was chosen for the foundation. The project was built on a site located on a former landfill known as “Erlosen.” The preschool has space for four groups, with a total of 91 spots.
