Earthen construction

Lehm Ton Erde Baukunst GmbH, based in Schlins, is constructing a production hall in the industrial park for the manufacture of precast components made of rammed earth. In addition to the hall, an adjoining office building is planned—which will also be constructed using rammed earth. The roof structure and parts of the production hall’s facade will be built using timber construction methods. The unique feature of this construction project is the use of earth as a load-bearing building material. In terms of both scale and construction method, the project represents a milestone in earthen construction. To determine the material properties, gbd LAB conducted various test series with rammed earth cubes as part of a research project. Untreated grain straw is used as insulation for the roof elements.
